Family Home Renovation in Moonee Ponds

  • Client: Middle aged couple with three children
  • Property: Large suburban family home
  • Location: Moonee Ponds, Melbourne, Victoria
  • Renovation: Update the Kitchen, 2x bathrooms, living room and a few minor works in the backyard
  • Project Duration: 8 weeks

BEFORE The Home Renovation

We were approached by a couple who had recently purchased their new family home situated in the Melbourne inner-city suburb, Moonee Ponds. The large suburban family home was in a fairly reasonable condition but prior to moving in the family of five wanted to modernise the kitchen, bathrooms and living room and complete some minor upgrade works in the backyard.

The clients felt the home lacked character and they were keen to give the interior a fresh look. They wanted to replace the existing dark wooden theme that ran through the kitchen and bathrooms with a modern black, white and grey design that would create a visual contrast and help enhance the natural light through the property. As part of the home renovation, the couple decided the existing exterior of the house with the pool looked good but they wanted to renew the pergola decking and glass balustrading and to finish with a tidy up of the landscape and clean up of the pool.

BEFORE Kitchen Renovation

The original kitchen was in fairly good condition, however the clients thought the orange varnished wooden cabinetry looked very dated and made the space dark and oppressive. They wanted to keep the efficient layout of the existing kitchen and introduce a clean, crisp contrast to the area and improve the natural light in the room.

BEFORE Bathroom Renovation

The clients wanted to renovate both the upstairs main bathroom and ensuite. They thought the dark brown wooden vanities were outdated and wanted to modernise the tiling and bathroom fittings and create a brighter dynamic in the rooms.

BEFORE Living Room Renovation

The clients were happy with the existing lounge room as they would be styling the space with their own furniture and individual style taste but wanted to add a gas heater to the living room to create a focal point in the room and keep them warm during the notorious Melbourne winters.

The House Renovation Process

We met with our clients at their newly purchased home to inspect the property and discuss in detail their ideas and preferences to create a modern renovation they would love for years to come. No permits were required for the internal or external renovation work as the client’s design did not include structural works and the layout of the rooms and backyard would remain almost the same.

After finalising the layout of the rooms, our design team consulted with the couple to guide them through the process of selecting all the necessary design elements such as colour choices, surface finishing, heater type, and all other fixtures and fittings required to complete the home renovation. The clients were very grateful for the guidance as they felt overwhelmed with making design decisions and were uncertain about what they wanted prior to deciding to renovate.  If there was anything they were unsure of, they would come to us and discuss it before making any solid decisions and trusted our advice. This made the whole renovation process a lot easier for the couple, especially as they had never renovated a home before.

The entire renovation project took a total of 8 weeks to complete. The clients were not living at the property for the duration of the project as they wanted the renovation works to be completed prior to moving in. This made it easier for our team to get the work completed and during the process we kept the couple updated on a weekly basis providing feedback and decisions on the progress. The clients loved the fact that they could come to us any time with questions throughout the build and were welcome to visit onsite and see each stage of the progress. Throughout the renovation process the clients were building up with excitement and heading toward the completion date they could see everything coming along as they hoped. Once the renovation work was finished we took the couple on a final walk through inspection.

AFTER The Home Renovation

AFTER Kitchen Renovation

The kitchen was updated to a Black and White theme to create a dynamic clean contrast to the space. The white cabinetry and pale stone bench top enhance the natural light in the room and lighten the entire kitchen. The stylish black upper cabinets create a strong contrast, with a reflective finish that opens up the space. By replacing the previous wooden cabinetry with white the original wooden floors now stand out beautifully.

The clients wanted a feature tiled splashback and opted for a pale grey to seamlessly blend the bench tops and the overall black and white theme of the space. With the addition of new appliances and modernised fixtures the kitchen renovation has created a bright, bold and practical kitchen area for preparing family meals and entertaining.

AFTER Bathroom Renovation

The upstairs main bathroom and ensuite were completely stripped out and updated with a sleek contemporary design. In keeping with the black and white theme of their renovation, the couple opted for black cabinetry in both the bathroom spaces, complemented with a charcoal grey tile.

The main bathroom was fitted with a free standing bath to open up the bathroom area and create a larger shower space. The matte finish black fixtures and shower edging bring contrast to the space and draw the whole design together to create a cohesive stylish bathroom renovation.

AFTER Living Room Renovation

The clients opted for a log fire effect gas heater to add to the central wall of their large open spaced family living room. The gas heater created a focal point to the previously plain wall and would create a warm cosy area perfect for the cold winter nights of Melbourne.

AFTER Backyard Renovation

To complete this beautiful family home renovation we installed and polished a pergola decking area that created a backyard feature that the couple could use for relaxing by the pool and entertaining family and friends.

The clients wanted a garden that was easy to maintain and child friendly so their children could run and play carefree. The tidy landscaping, combined with a minimal maintenance small lawn makes the perfect backyard for the busy family of five. We then installed a glass balustrading and cleaned up the pool ready for them to dive in on moving day.

Our Moonee Ponds family were super excited about moving into their beautiful new family home and looking forward to enjoying a family life of summer days in the stylish backyard and cosy winter nights in their living room.
